GP2XWiz News is a News and downloads site for
the GP2X and GP2X Wiz, We have all the latest emulators, homebrew
and all the downloads on this site, we also cover commercial gaming
and console news. Part of the DCEmu Homebrew & Gaming Network.
I noticed, that the very usefull touchscreen test included in firmware 1.0.0 and 1.0.1 don't work with fw 1.1.0 (or is it just me?).
Bug or intention, I don't know.
So I ripped the file from fw 1.1.0 (it's still there] and uploaded it to the archive.
Just unzip and copy it to your SD card. Now you can start it with the launcher and exit with L+R buttons.
This file is originally included with Noiz2sa from notaz.
With this file it is possible to reduce screen tearing and remove stutter on firmware 1.1.0 in many games.
Here's an example for Quake 2:
Download Noiz2a from the archive. Copy the file pollux_dpc_set to the Quake 2 folder.
Now edit q2.gpe:
#!/bin/sh
./cpufreq --freq 750
./pollux_dpc_set 'lcd_timings=397,1,37,277,341,0,17,337;clkdiv0=9'
./sdlquake2 +set vid_ref softsdl +set s_khz 22
#for a timedemo run add +set timedemo 1 +map demo1.dm2
cd /usr/gp2x/
./gp2xmenu
Add the line starting with ./pollux... to the wrapper script. Now the application runs with changed display timings to reduce tearing and stutter on firmware 1.1.0.
Do not change the values after lcd_timings exept you know what you're doing.
Use an Unix compatible editor like Notepad++.
With this solution there is no performance hit but possible shorter battery life. Only the display timings are changed.
The tearing is not complete eliminated with this, but I hardly noticed any tearing in Quake 2 or Noiz2sa.
Pickle has updated the port of Gmenu2Xfor the Wiz:
GMenu2X is a very very good alternative frontend for the wiz. It supports overclocking, sound volume setting, touchscreen, etc. GMenu2X allows you to create direct links for your games & applications so that you can directly launch them without having to browse through all the filesystem manually, resulting in a better user experience.
Gmenu2x is no longer beta
I finished adding clock and battery support for the wiz version.
The clockspeed is capped at 900 Mhz. The default clock for applications is at 550 Mhz.
It is changeable in all situations by 10 mhz.
Im not confident that the battery monitoring is accurate. I added the wiz's battery device but left the battery levels the same as the gp2x. Im assuming GPH left it the same, which they usually do.
Pickle has released a new version of his Gameboy Emulator for the Wiz:
Features a number of new scalers such as Notaz's gpsp interpolation scaler, scale2x filter modes.
Supports internal overlocking at wiz speeds.
Sound is still a bit rough (if anyone wants to take a look, feel free as im stumped)
HardyX has released a new beta of his Playstation Emulator for the Wiz, heres the translated news:
Hello friends,
Os dejo Psx4Wiz test 8. It is a development release for those who want to test games and discuss the results. Have a read in Spanish and English with the keys and their use.
Saquéis not in the news still is not the final version. I've been working on speeding up the painting and the memory, and there is still much room for improvement. This version is slightly faster than the previous one. Later I will test with OpenGL, but I can not promise anything. These developments are bringing:
- Selection of cpu speed from 100 to 800 mhz.
- Fixed the buttons X / Y and L / R that was changing.
- Use of wiz_lib to accelerate the painted screen.
- Disabled the sound, which would earn some frames.
- Skin background menus emulator.
Her Knights was (at the time) one of the most celebrated games of commercial GP32. A Beat'em Up with all of the law: 5 characters to choose from, each with 2 different styles of fighting and magic, a clever, many enemies, difficulty adjusted and good graphics.
Among other features, the game has different end as the actions taken during the course of multiple characters and unlockables hidden beyond the game at different difficulty levels.
Smyp has updated the port of REminiscence for the Wiz, heres the release notes:
Update to the REminiscence Wiz port:
Version 0.3:
- Implemented password entering using the Up/Down buttons
- Button L can be used as "use item", this is much more convenient for using the force field while shooting
- Screen shaking (last level) now centered on screen

Notaz has posted a new release of his GBA Emulator for Wiz
Changelog:
0.9-2xb u6
- Fixed clock and scaling config saving.
- Fixed occasional crash on first ROM load on 1.1 firmware.
- Added LCD timing setup code, which can be controlled through
'pollux_dpc_set' environment vatiable (see gpsp.gpe wrapper script).
This is a small application that creates .ini files for all applications that are in the SD card's game folder. It tries to avoid overwriting or creating duplicate .ini files if they already exist.
Notaz has released a new version of the GBA Emulator for the GP2X:
gpSP2X is a version of my (Exophase)'s emulator originally for Sony PSP.
A large amount of effort has been done to make it more optimized for the
ARM CPU present in the GP2X, however it is still very much a work in
progress.
See readme.txt for the PSP version readme, which contains a lot of
information relevant to the GP2X version (note that some of it does
not apply however).

GPH have given me 2 new videos to share with everyone:
1: Propis.
Once upon a time, in a far off star there was a prince and his beloved citizens. Suddenly one day a kind of jelly called Propis fell from the sky and destroyed most of the town. The prince and his citizens have called for an SOS to clear out all the Propis, and everyone in the town came up to help clear up the mess!

Headoverheels has today released a new version of the Final Burn Arcade emulator for the GP2X Wiz:
Hello everyone
I decided to publish a version for fba2x wiz that I have worked in a few days. It is a very preliminary version, so it has bugs, games will not work, etc.. However many games are playable (CPS1-2, NeoGeo, cave, ...)
To generate caches can use version 7.3 from version fbacache
Blast Riot! is a fast paced retro shoot-em-up. Two Parts Crossroads, One part Llamatron. Don't let the screenshot fool you, it's more fun than it looks!
Hardyx and others have been working on the Playstation Emulator for GP2x Wiz
This is the preliminar version of my port of PSX4ALL, based in the code published by Zodttd. The emulator is compiled using standard SDL functions and works in Wiz now. You can load games and play. It has been tested in the prototype of a friend.
The code is compiled in dynamic link mode using the GP2X SDK. This way works in both GP2X and Wiz consoles, but is not using direct hardware access and isn't optimized for Wiz. I have created a Wiz SDL wrapper for the minilib library based in the GP2X and Pandora wrapper code.
This is a developer's test version, can have bugs and isn't optimized for the hardware. Here is the executable is you want to test it, and a photo (low res) of the emu working.
Comments about testing in the console are welcomed.
Max must solve some things called 'Ghostpix', or ghost pictures. At first he won't see anything of the picture, but using logic and his ghost powers he will reveal the hidden picture.
This videogame is based on a popular japanese game called picross.
RetroChallenge commences July 1st, 2009 and runs until July 31st, 2009
In order to qualify, computer systems must use a pre-pentium processor... in general, this means 486 or below, 680x0 and pretty much everything with an 8-bit processor, but we'll also let you in if you have an old Cray kicking about.
Gaming consoles and PDAs qualify if they are at least ten years old as of July1, 2009.
Where appropriate, replica hardware and emulators may be used.
Entrants are responsible for adequately documenting their projects and submitting occasional updates during the contest.
Projects may encompass any aspect of retrocomputing that tickles the fancy of the individual entrant.
Winners will be arbitrarily chosen and crap prizes doled out during the first week of August 2009.
Have fun.
Divineo UK are the latest company to stock and be in stock (most companies are out of stock) of the newly released Wiz and the accessories such as the Screen protector, Leather case and accessories kit.
